What is iCal synchronization?

iCal (the .ics format) is a standard for exchanging calendar data. Booking platforms publish an export iCal link for each listing — another tool periodically loads the reservations and occupancy from it. It is the most universal way of connecting systems: it is supported by Airbnb, Booking.com, and practically every PMS and channel manager.

Strengths and weaknesses

The strength of iCal is its universality and simplicity — it works without a complicated integration. Its limits: synchronization is periodic (not instant) and mainly transfers dates and basic reservation details, not the full guest detail. For instant synchronization of prices and availability, direct integrations are used; for reading reservations for the purposes of statutory records, iCal is usually enough.

Why it matters

For a Slovak accommodation provider, iCal is the fastest way to get reservations from all channels into a tool that handles the statutory obligations on top of them — online guest check-in, the accommodation register (kniha ubytovaných), and the accommodation tax — without changing the PMS or channel manager.
